Wales Flag

Welsh flag

The flag of Wales (Welsh: Baner Cymru or Y Ddraig Goch, meaning "red dragon") consists of a red dragon on a green and white field. The red Welsh dragon was used as an emblem as early as the reign of Cadwaladr, King of Gwynedd from around 655 AD. The Historia Brittonum was written around 828 and by that time the dragon was no longer just a military symbol, but was associated with the coming liberator from the Saxons and, for the first time, as a symbol of independence. It is also the first time that the colour of the dragon is demonstrably given as red. In 1959 it was officially recognised as the Welsh national flag. The dragon is part of the flag of several cities, including Cardiff, the capital of Wales.
