Cornwall (St Piran) Flag

Saint Piran's Flag

The earliest known record of this flag was recorded by Davies Gilbert in his 1838 work, The Parochial History of Cornwall. The fact that Gilbert refers to it as the 'former' standard of Cornwall suggests that he believed it was in use before 1838. However, Gilbert left no record of his background research and referred only to his "recollection". One of the earliest depictions of the flag can be seen in a stained glass window in Westminster Abbey. It was unveiled in 1888 in memory of the famous Cornish inventor and engineer Richard Trevithick. The window depicts St Michael above and the nine Cornish saints in rows below. The head of Saint Piran is probably a portrait of Trevithick himself and the figure carries the Cornish banner.
