Amsterdam flag

Flag of the City of Amsterdam

The colours of the flag are mainly derived from the shield of the Amsterdam coat of arms. According to the city authorities, its origins could go back to the coat of arms of the Persijn family, which once owned extensive land in the capital. These colours, as well as the crosses, can be seen on the flags of Ouder-Amstel and Amstelveen. The flag was officially adopted on 5 February 1975, although it was already in use before that date, being seen, for example, on the cover of the daily programme of the Summer Olympics held in Amsterdam in 1928. Before its official adoption, a flag with the city's coat of arms in the centre of a red, white and black horizontal tricolour was also unofficially used.
